Ponnalai Varatharaja Perumal Kovil

Background

One of the ancient temples dedicated to Lord Thirumal situated in Ponnalai in the Jaffna district is called VaratharajaPerumalKovil. The holy “Theertham” of this temple is the oceanic sea. The Vanni tree growing in the temple premises is believed to bear some divine significance. A special feature of this temple is that annual high festivals are held on two different occasions. The Brahmotsavam (annual high festival) is held in such a manner that the Ther or car festival which is the 9th day of the high festival falls on the Krishna Jayanthi (Birth day of Load Krishna) day and the total number of days of the annual high festivals is ten, The frontal tower (Raja Gopuram) of this temple 108 feet high.
